How to Use Markups and Taxes Effectively

In Smetter, you can apply a markup to an individual item, a Stage, or the entire Estimate. It is not always obvious which approach works best, so below we explain the most effective ways to use markups, taxes, and discounts.

To build in your main profit margin apply a markup to each item in the Estimate Editor
To show markups to the Client clearly, add it at the end of the Estimate or at the end of each Stage
For VAT, it is best to add it to the Estimate using the dedicated tax option
  1. To build in your main profit margin apply a markup to each item in the Estimate Editor. This way, Client statements will include your markup as work is completed, so you earn your margin as soon as those statements are paid.
  2. To show markups to the Client clearly, add it at the end of the Estimate or at the end of each Stage. This approach can also be used for taxes under the simplified tax system. That way, the Client can clearly see that this amount is a tax rather than part of your fee. The same applies to discounts: apply them to the total Estimate or to individual Stages to make your proposal more attractive to the Client.
  3. To show markups to the Client clearly add it to the Estimate using the dedicated tax option. This ensures VAT is included in all documents.
